It is more crucial than ever to understand the perspectives and experiences of the next generation of professionals entering the workforce as the industry continues to adapt to the changing landscape. That's why we hosted a Soundings panel discussion with Gen Z event professionals – to better understand young professionals starting their careers and hear their experiences breaking into the industry, the challenges they face, and their aspirations to build a better future together.

No matter your job title, everyone in the event industry has something to gain from getting to know the emerging workforce! After all, to work better together, we must first understand one another. In this article, we explore highlights and insights gained from our ‘Let’s Talk Gen Z’ panel discussion.

Gen Z Panel Insights

1) Exploring Passion and Finding Opportunities

Doing work they love is important to many Gen Z professionals and that’s exactly how many found their way into the events industry. Many first discovered their passion through their involvement in extracurricular activities and internships. These experiences provided them with hands-on learning opportunities and a glimpse into the world of event planning and marketing.

However, it is essential to understand two key factors that have affected the careers of many Gen Z event professionals:

  1. While some may have gained entry-level experience, not all educational programs offer comprehensive event management courses, which can create a gap in technical knowledge and understanding of the industry for aspiring professionals.

  2. Or the opposite is true – Many Gen Z professionals attended specialized higher education programs in the events industry, only to graduate during a challenging period for this sector. As a result, many emerging professionals did not have the opportunity for as much hands-on experience.

The takeaway: We must provide proper education and opportunities for Gen Z professionals to learn and practice their craft.

2) Overcoming Challenges in the Job Search

The job search process can be challenging for many Gen Z professionals. Some have faced negative misconceptions and stereotypes about their generation, which can hinder their chances of securing a job or, at a minimum, be discouraging for those trying to enter the workforce. Additionally, due to the minimal experience mentioned above, they may find it difficult to articulate relevant transferable and soft skills.

The takeaway: It is important for employers to recognize the value and potential that Gen Z professionals bring to the table – i.e. propensity to quickly understand technology, adaptability to change, experience with social media, an understanding of generational needs in events, and more! – and to provide opportunities for growth and development. Be creative in interview questions to dig deeper and understand the individual as well as help identify indirect skills that could be helpful.

3) The Power of Mentorship

Mentorship plays a crucial role in the career development of Gen Z professionals. Having a mentor who provides guidance, support, and a valuable network of connections can be the difference between a thriving career and a non-starter. Gen Z professionals appreciate mentors who are willing to share their experiences, offer advice, and create a safe space for growth and learning.

The takeaway: Employers and industry leaders can contribute to the success of Gen Z professionals by fostering a culture of mentorship within their organizations. This can be achieved by providing structured mentorship programs, encouraging senior employees to act as mentors, and promoting open communication and learning opportunities.

4) The Importance of Work-Life Balance

Gen Z professionals place a high value on work-life balance. They have witnessed the toll that work can take on individuals and thus prioritize their well-being and personal fulfillment alongside professional achievements.

The takeaway: Employers are more likely to attract and retain Gen Z talent when they prioritize work-life balance and create flexible environments.

5) The Value of Authenticity and Inclusivity

Gen Z professionals are drawn to organizations that prioritize authenticity, purpose, and inclusivity. They want to work for companies that align with their values and actively contribute to making the world a better place.

When it comes to managers, Gen Zers seek out trust, support, and care as their top three leadership traits.

The takeaway: Employers can demonstrate their commitment to these values by fostering diverse and inclusive work environments, promoting social responsibility, and creating opportunities for personal growth and development.

Looking ahead

Gen Z professionals are entering the events industry with a unique perspective and a desire to make a positive impact. Their experiences and insights provide valuable lessons for employers and industry leaders. Organizations can attract and retain top talent in the events industry by recognizing the importance of mentorship, fostering a culture of inclusivity, and aligning with the values and aspirations of Gen Z professionals. The future of the industry lies in the hands of this next generation, and by supporting their growth and development, we can create a brighter future together.
